With the propagation of Dhamma by the Mahamevnawa Meditation center, women once again received the opportunity to become ordained as nuns in the Gautama Supreme Buddha’s dispensation. Under the guidance of Most Venerable Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero, the Mahamevnawa Anagarika Monastery was established for those women wishing to devote their lives to practicing the Dhamma. The first and main nuns’ monastery was built at Mutugala, in Dambadeniya area on September 10th of 2003 for five resident Anagarika nuns consisting of a small Buddha hall, small alms hall, and two lodgings.
Since the Binara full moon day when the Bhikkhuni Sangha was established in the world, the Mahamevnawa Anagarika Monastery has provided the warmth of the dispensation for upasikas (female disciples) to develop the Dhamma path.
For many years the founder of Mahamevnawa—Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero—has wanted to share the Supreme Buddha’s Dhamma with the innocent children living in Colombo attending international schools. He wisely understood that as they became more and more dedicated to English learning, they would need to also learn the true Buddha’s teachings in English.
It became clear that having English speaking nuns living closer to Colombo would be a great blessing for the lay disciples, especially women and young girls in Colombo. With the Blessing of Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero, the Buddhist Nuns of Mahamevnawa was established in March 2022, in a rented property at Jayawardenapura kotte and was relocated to Longdon place, Colombo 7 in march 2023.
Now lay disciples, in Colombo have the opportunity to illuminate their hearts and minds with wholesome qualities such joy, loving-kindness and compassion under the guidance of the Buddhist Nuns of Mahamevnawa. They can also gain great merits by helping to continue this meritorious Dhamma propagation by offering Dana and contributing to the monthly expenses of the property.
